Daystate’s Red Wolf is a thing of beauty for sure, with curvaceous lines and contours, that can’t fail to impress. Yet these electronically managed technical masterpieces, by definition, are about way more than looks. Indeed, shortly after its launch, the Red Wolf was seeing off opposition in Extreme Bench Rest competitions in the USA, and its’ that combination of refinement and sophistication, along with a striking profile, that makes it such a popular choice with airgun enthusiasts worldwide.
Daystate’s policy of increasingly modular design, and after-market accessories, to satisfy their demanding fan base, mean that a raft of add-ons are available, to enhance the performance and handling of the original model, and the Red Wolf is most definitely no different.
Get a Grip
That buddy bottle configuration, gives the Red Wolf a modern look for sure, and allows for a huge shot count, but the down side, as with any similarly configured rifle, can be having to grip the bottle up front as it doubles as the forend. OK, use of carbon fibre means it’s a little more tactile, but it can still be a source of irritation. And that’s where the Daystate Red Wolf PRS Extended Rail comes in – an add-on which is easy to fit, and will transform handling in seconds.
Manufactured in the UK by Precision Rifle Systems, (That’s the PRS), this is high grade hardware, guaranteed to perfectly enhance the original rifle. Gavyn Jones is the man behind PRS, and as a familiar face on the Hunter Field Target circuit over the last few years, and a skilled engineer, it’s little wonder his products have proved so popular among serious competition shooters, in both Field Target and Hunter Field Target (HFT), as well as airgun aficionados in general. Gavyn was tasked by Daystate to produce a high grade component which would combine both form and function, and we have to conclude that the end result is a clever addition to their after-market kit list.
Features & Fitting
Just pick up the Daystate PRS Extended Rail, and the precision CNC engineering is immediately apparent. It’s solid, but being machined from aluminium, won’t add too much weight. Finish is robust and durable, being black anodized.
Fitting is simple, since the Daystate Red Wolf Extended Rail is designed to attach to the underside of the fore-end using the existing stock mounting point. With the stock bolt removed, it just needs care to prevent the action coming out of the stock, before the rail can be quickly fixed into position. Otherwise, it couldn’t be a simpler process.
As for the features, this is a comprehensive design, offering a picatinny rail up front, to take all manner of accessories. There’s a section of UIT accessory rail, and also a wide Arca rail set back for tripod use. There’s also a bump stop to prevent any contact with the buddy bottle, so we’re definitely talking attention to detail.
In Use
Versatility is the name of the game here, and whether hunting or just casual use, just having the option to fit lasers, bipods and the like, opens up a whole new world of possibilities.
Being designed in conjunction with Daystate, means this Extended Rail is of course factory endorsed, so there’s no element of risk as to compatibility. The Red Wolf as mentioned, is a beautiful rifle – effectively a piece of performance art, with it’s satisfyingly tasteful contours and ergonomic configuration from the start.
Fit the Extended Rail however, and once bolted into position, the looks and profile are subtly enhanced. Flowing lines of the rail mate perfectly with the beautiful laminate stock, and the result is aesthetically pleasing. In the aim, feel and handling in the field is equally impressive, as the lead hand now has different contact/ grip points, dependent upon shooting position adopted.
That includes standing shots, where the rear section of the rail beefs up the forend depth, offering perfect support for a target stance.
In short, it’s superbly made, transforms handling, brings versatility, and is quick and easy to fit.
